black + bees + honey gold

Getting dressed for a new job can be SO confusing. On one hand, I have what I have and that is what I can wear because that's my style. On the other, there's this craving to conform so that all the new people surrounding you see that you want to be a part of their team and you want to be friendly and fit in with them.
Of course I don't want to change who I am, they did hire me for me. But its still hard the first couple of weeks when you can barely remember people's names and are stumbling home every night with a brain made of mush from all the information you've crammed in all day.
I also want to be taken seriously. I haven't really ever spoken about what I do on the blog before, but I guess it could be time. I work in media research which is basically the who, what, where, when, why and how of media consumers. Ever hear people toss around phrases about a shows "ratings"? That's a really basic example of what I analyze. This helps the network understand what they are doing right, what they are doing wrong, and how they can sell ads.
I was formerly doing this for a media agency and now for CNN. Working for CNN is a dream come true for a former journalism student/huge-nerd. In high school we were asked to write our own obituaries and mine talked about how I worked at CNN. So even though I'm not on the content side of things...its a big-fucking-deal for me.
I want this to great. To make friends or at the very least be on friendly terms with everyone, to be taken seriously and to exceed expectations in my work.
While I'm in the office learning everything I can to make me good at this job, I don't want to be thinking about my clothes. Of course I will be a little because I love fashion, but I don't want it to interfere with anything I do here.
Here is something really simple I put together on Monday for work. Just because I'm feeling honest-- I changed into flats for most of the day. Nobody wants to be the girl who can't keep up her second week of work because of her ridiculously high heels.
Cooperative sweater, AA skirt, Jeffrey Campbell oxfords, Antoine et Lili purse, vintage watch and bumblebee brooch

  1. I've always been curious as to what you worked at because unlike quite a few style bloggers you actually have a 9-5 job :) I was going to say a regular 9-5 job..but working for CNN is pretty irregular.. and impressive!! Congrats on the new job and if your blog posts are anything to go by, your co-workers can't but like you! Love this bee print blouse by the way...although I'm terrified of bees. But maybe a top like this might desensitize me :)

  2. It is really such an awesome thing that you landed that job.  Soo happy for you!   I'm sure it's going to be great, and you'll of course look great along the way- especially if you keep wearing super adorable sweaters covered in bumblebees that I am already planning on stealing somehow.  Yup.  You'll go far. x

  3. Did you say you had to write your own obituaries?! That a little morbid ;)  I think you the outfit you picked out for the new job is perfect. It represents you but is still professional.

  4.  Apparently its a common exercise for high school seniors in order organize goals for the future. I wrote mine so that I died when I was 22, because I was lazy and preferred driving around in my car with my friends to homework.

  6. Very impressive!  That's such a prestigious company to work for.  You're proven what I long suspected -- you have brains equal to your beauty.  That's rare.

I love the bee pin on the bee top!  Sooo brilliant.  Off to ebay search bee-print things now! : )

Anyway, as for dressing for work, I'm generally slobby in my current job, but my rules for when I want to make an effort are 1) can I walk properly and 2) am I properly covered so I don't have to fiddle with hemlines etc.  I figure if those basics are covered, no one's going to mind the colours and prints too much.  Though I did get about 3000 Mary Poppins comments for wearing white tights the other day.

Best of luck on this 'learning the ropes' phase.  I'm sure you'll be amazing!

  8. Wow, that new job sounds like an incredible opportunity! Truly a dream come true :) I think that outfit was a good choice - that sweater is just perfect - and as much as I love those heels, I can totally understand changing into flats. I'm able to wear heels a lot at my job because our office is so small, but even then, I usually wear flats at least once a week to give my feet a break and so I don't fall way behind when I'm walking to lunch!

  9. Congrats on the dream job! Your outfit is all classic cuts with a little bit of umph, so I think it's perfect. I wouldn't worry about it, they hired you for you.

  13. I'm glad you shared that, I absolutely love hearing what people do for jobs & it sounds like you have a super awesome one, congrats on getting it & on your hard work!! I majored in marketing so all that sounds super interesting to me too. I completely know what you mean w/ the outfits, I've been at my job since Nov & feel like I'm just now letting my real style shine more for fear of not being taken seriously. Anyway, that sweater is AMAZING, love u put a bee pin as well!

  14. You look so cute! I really love your bumblebee pin and those oxford heels. That's really cool that you work in media research. I'm doing media studies in school so perhaps I'll be doing something similar some day.
