A dark tower on Canal Street

Here is what I wore yesterday to work. My outfit was partially inspired by the Wicked Witch of the West if her dark tower was in Manhattan and she had interns instead of flying monkeys. That is also a pretty accurate representation of my thought process early in the morning while I'm showering and deciding what to wear.
It was dismal outside and the whole day felt like a long night. I would have preferred to be at home reading spooky stories with candles lit all around, but it was made better by going to eat pappardele bolognese with butternut squash and zucchini and eggplant fries at Diva. Yum!

  6. Really? How come? I'm waiting for Rich to finish so we can chat about it, but until then I don't really know anyone who's read it. In terms of "spooky" I like Dracula better. In terms of good reading I thought it was really interesting (I got so absorbed in the monsters tale about the DeLacey's I wanted a whole book about them!)

  11. The book definitely has it's flaws (I felt like Shelley focused on scenery descriptions too much and it subsequently dragged down the story a bit), but I was completely blown away by how multi-layered and fascinating the characters were! I had no idea the original Dr. Victor Frankenstein was not at all the "mad scientist" pop culture had painted him out to be, but instead a very sensitive human soul who creates the monster in the first place because he is trying to "cure" death (after being utterly lost by his mother's death) - and he loves the people in his life so deeply it is touching to me. A lot of his actions were very questionable, but his mistakes endeared him to me and made him all the more "real". The actual monster also was not at all what I was expecting. Instead of a simple-minded creature with no humanity, he speaks English and explains to us himself what fueled his actions. Lookswise, he is descried as having yellow skin that "barley covers the muscles and arteries underneath" - an image that strikes me as much more scary than any adaptation of the monster I have seen!

I didn't really find it very scary, but the Gothic elements were really interesting, and the story overall is really fascinating and striking to me. By the time I was finished I thought it was a truly excellent book. Sorry this is so long, I just have a lot of thoughts on the subject, ha!
