Miscalculation

Last Sunday I wandered in to the American Apparel in hunt of some new tights. When I walked in a tiny blonde folding tee-shirts screams at me, "Oh, I LOVE your skirt." I stared at her like she was insane and mumbled something close to "thank you."
While scanning the great wall of legwear Bubbles as she will affectionately heretofore be known prances over and offers assistance. I agree and this is the conversation that followed:
Bubbles:It is SO hard to find anything over here!
Me: Yea. I used to do retail it can be frustrating.
Bubbles: Where did you work!?
Me: National Jean, Delia's, PacSun. But this was years ago.
Bubbles: Well what do you do now?
Me: Media.
Bubbles:(scoffs) OHHH media?
Me: Yep.
Bubbles: Well how old are you?
Me: Honestly, how old do you think I am?
Bubbles: (pauses for thought, and possibly to count on her fingers and toes) 17!
Me: No.
Bubbles: Are you younger?!
Me: No. I'm 23.
Bubbles: Oh. Wow, you look so young for your age!
H&M skirt,UO tee, Alloy tights, H&M fake keds, questionable Marc Jacobs bag from Manila, Old Navy sweater
It could have had something to do with the outfit. Or, maybe I just look really young, because she thinks at 23 I should look like I'm on death's doorstep. When I was 15 I probably thought the same thing though. Part of me was a little annoyed and part of me was thinking, "Please please let this young assumption last well into my old age!"

  1. LOL! Wow. That is awesome though! I guess most 23 year olds are just really stressed out looking since they have all finished school and are wandering around looking for a job :) You look very sweet! I love your skirts!

  6. I know how you feel - I still get carded everywhere I go and the legal age here is 19! It'll be flattering when we're older I guess

  7. I have the opposite problem. I'm 17 and so many people think I'm around 20 before they find out I'm still in high school. It's good for going out, though!
But she did have a point - your skirt is cute.

  9. I am the complete opposite, I'm 16 and at my new internship everyone thought i was 20. When I told them I was 16 they couldn't believe it. Hopefully It was just the outfit or something.

  13. That skirt IS cute. The floral print is just wonderful. The whole "you look so young for your age" comment is a bit out of place though. It's not as if people age dramatically between the ages of 17 and 23. I think for the most part, how we dress affects perceptions of how old we are. I'm sure someone who sees me in business clothes would assume I'm much older than I am when I am in play clothes. As for Bubbles, I wonder how old she is?

  16. This post is really perfect! I find i can't walk out of american apparel without being pissed off at the staff in some way...last time i was really nice to the girl near the change room because she seemed intimidated or new...then she fully accused me of stealing - and i hadn't taken anything! it was so maddening!!!

  17. This has totally happened to me. I walked into BCBG and I told the sales people I was looking for a graduation dress. They thought high school graduation. It was college. I was really offended and kind of wanted to die.

But I really don't think you look 17... Haha.
